Camping In The City: Collective Governors Island

Camping in NY? What! That’s what Collective Retreats is proposing with its Collective Governors Island opening this month on the island just 800 yards from Lower Manhattan (and even closer to Brooklyn) and accessible by an 8 minute ferry ride from Lower Manhattan (five minutes from Brooklyn Bridge Park)

Operating as a military base for the US Army and, later the Coast Guard, the island’s been closed to the public for close to two centuries. But in the last dozen years, it’s slowly been transformed into a popular recreational destination.

Now Collective Retreats, an experimental travel company, founded by CEO Peter Mack, which is redefining traditional hotels through its collection of unique retreats in unexpected places — currently Vail, Colorado; Big Sky, Montana; Hudson, New York; and Hill Country, Texas — whichcombine 5 star luxury with authentic ruggedness, opens on its latest itineration on Governors Island

Inspired by an aesthetic of Scandinavian minimalism merged with the Island’s nautical history, Cassie Novick, Collective Retreats’ in-house designer, has carefully curated a collection of maritime trinkets on display throughout the retreat in simple but beautiful guest tents — there are 10 Summit tents and 27 Journey tents — that complement the stunning views of the NYC skyline.

Each guest room includes plush beds, an in-tent French Press coffee bar, electricity, and Wi-Fi. Summit Tents are equipped with high-end amenities, including 1,500 thread count sheets, private en-suite bathrooms, private decks, and more.

Three Peaks, the signature restaurant, provides dinner options featuring local ingredients.
